The deeper the Collierville High baseball team goes in the postseason, the more crucial it will be to have a pitcher on staff like Peyton Calitri.

The senior right-hander weathered one difficult inning on Monday but otherwise was terrific as the Dragons advanced to Wednesday's District 15-AAA championship with a 5-4 victory over visiting Houston. Collierville is now 32-3-1 on the year.

"Peyton's a big-game pitcher and he's been that since he walked on campus," said Dragons coach Jeff Munier. "When we need to get a big win he's usually there and he kept us in the game."

Calitri, who will play next season at Walters State, ran into his only spot of trouble in the top of the fifth with the Dragons already ahead, 5-1. Grayson Hitt plated a run for Houston with a sacrifice fly and then Pierre Seals doubled in two runs to make it a one-run game.

He then pitched a 1-2-3 sixth before giving way to Zach Jackson, who walked the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh but retired Hitt for the second out and then blew a fastball past Seals to close out the win. Calitiri allowed five hits and struck out four while throwing 57 of his 89 pitches for strikes.

"Just trying to get quick innings and letting the defense work," said Calitri, who "struggled" some in an outing against Houston earlier this year.

"I pitched against them last year and dominated but (earlier this year) I didn't have my best stuff. I knew what I was up against (Monday)."

Gabe Nicholson and Mitch Austin each drove in two runs to pace Collierville, which will play in Wednesday's 4:30 p.m. title game against the winner of Tuesday's game between Houston (29-7) and Germantown. The Red Devils eliminated Southwind on Monday, 11-1.

"Germantown is a good ball club," said Houston coach Lane McCarter. "We've beaten them three times (this year) and it's hard to beat a good team four times. We've got to play our game, take care of business and do what we can do."

Around the horn
Brayden Arendale held Arlington to four hits as Bartlett advanced to the 14-AAA championship game with a 7-2 victory over Arlington. The Tigers will face Bolton Tuesday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game with the winner taking on Bartlett at 7 at USA Stadium.

Carter Park scattered five hits and five innings and also drove in two runs as St. George's advanced to the Division 2-A West Region title game with a 5-3 victory over Northpoint. Wil Wood also drove in two runs for the Gryphons while Reagan Burford pitched the last two innings to record the save.

Northpoint will meet Tipton-Rosemark in an elimination game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. with the winner of that one facing St. George's for the title at 7. Both of those games will be played at Jackson Christian.

TRA stayed alive Monday with a 6-2 victory over University School of Jackson as Zach Seward improved to 7-1 and combined with Tyler Byrd to hold the Bruins scoreless after the first innings.

Middle College won the District 15-A title, 15-0 over MAHS.

In district 14-AAA softball, Abbi Zwissler pitched a three-inning perfect game, striking out eight of nine batters, in Arlington's 19-0 victory over Cordova. Autumn Belviy homered twice for the Tigers while Kendall Graham and Hannah Moore also went deep.

Houston won twice to stave off elimination in 15-AAA. The Mustangs blanked Germantown, 11-0, then scored three runs in the eighth to eliminate Southwind, 11-9. Cailey Robbins picked up both victories for Houston, which faces Collierville for the district title.
